Social Studies Updates and Resources
Northern Michigan Learning Consortium (NMLC) has hired a shared services consultant to help us with Social Studies. His name is David Johnson and he is housed at Wexford-Missaukee ISD. I will frequently be sharing his information with you here, and you are welcome to contact him directly with questions or requests. On January 31, 2012 we held the Middle School/High School Social Studies Roundtable. Dave Johnson presented information about the upcoming assessments and how the ELA assessment uses Social Studies content in the assessment tasks. He also demonstrated a Close and Critical Reading activity for the Declaration of Independence. All of the materials he shared can be found at the nmlc social studies wiki mentioned above; click on the Professional Development box and go down to the COOR ISD Roundtable link.
At the Roundtable, we agreed that we needed more TIME to work on Close and Critical Reading lessons for the primary documents. We are attempting to find a date in early April (maybe the 16th?) for this session. It would be held at COOR and we are encouraging ELA teachers to come with the Social Studies teachers to build the lessons together. We will ke
